Africans in the Netherlands

The SMA is committed not only to people in Africa, but also to Africans in the Netherlands. The SMA is particularly involved in pastoral care for Africans in Amsterdam Southeast.

Since 2024, this has been happening in the new SMA Africa House, which is located in the church building of the All Saints parish.

In Amsterdam, the SMA is responsible for the pastoral and diaconal care of the West African community in Amsterdam Southeast and throughout the Diocese of Haarlem-Amsterdam at the All Saints parish. The building housing the parish was purchased by the diocese for this parish and has been converted and furnished by the community into an "Africa House" with assistance from the SMA.

The community (officially a quasi-parish) has over 300 members who are active in various ways both within and outside their own community. Dean Ambro Bakker SMA of Amsterdam is responsible for this parish, while day-to-day management is in the hands of SMA priests from outside the Netherlands.

Father Augustin N'Dah SMA from Benin currently lives in the rectory. He is responsible for the French-speaking Africans in and around Amsterdam. Father Emmanuel Andoh SMA from Ghana is expected to come to the Netherlands soon to take over the daily management of the parish. Father Alan de Guzman SMA from the Philippines is also expected to join the community soon. He will also be responsible for the Filipino communities in and around Amsterdam.

SMA Training Center

At the nearby SMA Training Center, candidates are trained for deployment to Africa as SMA lay missionaries. The center is led by Liesbeth Glas, an SMA lay associate, who herself has experience in Africa, working in Ghana and Liberia.

For questions about the program or a potential broadcast, please contact Liesbeth. The center is housed in "Stap Verder," an ecumenical diaconal institution in which SMA is a participant. Liesbeth is also responsible for various other activities within "Stap Verder" for the Afrikaans community, including providing language lessons.
