Associates weekend: in the sun in the south

From Friday afternoon, March 28th, to Sunday, March 30th, SMA associates gathered at the Nivon House in Heerlen. They took excursions around the city and visited the Mission House in Cadier en Keer.

On Saturday morning, the group visited the Mining Museum in Heerlen, led by Bert Boumans. He has been associated with the SMA for many years through the training program for associates and various advisory committees. Since moving to Heerlen and reaching retirement age, he has been a dedicated tour guide for the Mining Museum.

Bert's highly inspiring story about the coal mines, their closure, and the consequences for this region was moving. With all the connections he made, we gained insight into the lives of the miners, their families, and their social lives. The Mining Museum is a must-see for anyone visiting Heerlen ( www.nederlandsmijnmuseum.nl ).

On Saturday afternoon, the SMA associates visited the Mission House in Cadier en Keer. This always brings back many memories and enthusiasm, as most associates lived there for a while. The group discussion with the new fathers from Ghana – Fabian Gbortsu, Paschale Deo Angyi, and Emmanuel Andoh – was also very inspiring. The warm welcome from Huub Senden and Superior Jos Pijpers, with pie, was much appreciated.

The SMA associates meet several times a year, both in connection with the SMA and as a support group for those working in the field. A strong bond has developed during their time deployed and working in African countries. The group also shares joys and sorrows.
