Anniversary gift: A school for Babaso

A celebration calls for gifts. To mark the centennial of the Dutch province of the SMA, the priests are naturally not asking for personal gifts, but they are asking for a donation for the further development of the Bresillac Primary School in Babaso, in the Afram Plains region of Ghana. SMA missionaries, including many Dutch priests and lay missionaries, have been active in this region for at least 50 years.

The Afram Plains are a backward and neglected region in Ghana. There is little to no infrastructure, poor medical care, and poor education. In 2016, the Society for African Missions began building a new school to better educate the children. However, due to a lack of funds, construction had to be halted at some point. Because it is the only school in the area, the children have been receiving education for several years now in a half-finished building. On very rainy days, classes cannot be held because the rain gets in.

Because the school building is unfinished, teachers and students cannot leave any teaching materials at the school. They must take them home every day. Even the tables and chairs are unsafe. There is no administrative office, and there are no restrooms. Currently, a temporary structure serves as a urinal, but it in no way meets the sanitary needs of either students or teachers.

The school has 537 students. It offers preschool, primary school, upper primary school, and secondary school. While it is a Catholic school, it teaches children of all backgrounds, regardless of their ethnicity, religion, or social status.

To mark its 100th anniversary, the Dutch SMA would like to help complete the Bresillac School. There is an urgent need to complete the classrooms, restrooms, and a playground to facilitate extracurricular activities.
