The Lulu project in Mwanza, Tanzania, has been successfully coordinated for the past three years by SMA lay missionary Susanne Beentjes. The aim is to continue the project in 2023, but due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and the current global situation, there is a funding shortage. The project is also in need of a second-hand car, which requires additional funding. This is our appeal for financial support for Susanne's mission.
The LULU project helps young women in Tanzania discover their talents and establish small businesses. Lulu means pearl in Swahili. LULU operates in and around the city of Mwanza on Lake Victoria, where many girls don't have the opportunity to finish school and become pregnant as teenagers. The project offers training in social skills, financial management, and caring for themselves and their families. This helps the young girls discover that, like a pearl, they are valuable.
Additional craft classes give them the skills to create their own beautiful products, which they sell as a creative way to earn money. Currently, the project consists of eleven women's groups spread across the city, each guided by two or three mentors. The eleventh group consists of women who are deaf or hard of hearing. They also organize craft workshops, receive financial support to set up businesses, distribute maternity packages, and give workshops on maternal and menstrual health at schools or (sports) clubs, where they give away their homemade reusable panty liners for free.
